Are you aware of the health benefits of laughter? When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried? Laughing is one of the best feelings in the world. You can share laughter with anyone that has a good sense of humor. Did you know that snickering, giggling, or even uncontrollable laughter can make anyone feel close to you? And laughter can make an awkward and cold environment into a warm and welcome atmosphere.

It’s great to share a good laugh with friends and family. But, did you know that there are actually multiple health benefits of laughter? Laughter is not just an action or an emotion, it’s also a medicine. Numerous studies show that laughter is a potent treatment for pain, emotional stress, and more. This action is so powerful that not only does it bring people together, but literally gives great benefits for your physical health, mental health, and social life. Prepare your giggles, because I am about to share with you the top eight benefits of laughter.

REDUCES STRESS HORMONES. As entrepreneurs, we love what we do but the stress is undeniable. Laughter reduces your stress hormones and cuts the anxiety and stress that impacts your body. And the reduction of stress hormones may result in higher immune system performance. When you feel stress levels building, take a break and have a laugh.  Walk over to a funny co-worker or hop on a funny website. Meet some friends to hang out with and laugh, or rewatch a funny movie you haven’t seen in a while.

BOOSTS IMMUNE SYSTEM. Another laughter benefit is that it can improve your immune system. It has been widely researched that laughter triggers antibody cells to grow at a faster rate. The increase in antibodies means that your body can fight off illness and recover from it much quicker than usual. Your T-cells are white blood cells or immune system cells that are just waiting to be activated by laughing. Try adding laughter in your prescriptions the next time you feel like you’re fighting a “bug.”

PREVENTS CANCER. Stopping cancer is one of the top laughter benefits we can ask for, right? Laughter can fight off cancer by increasing the response of tumor and disease-killing cells such as Gamma-interferon and T-cells in our body. Once that happens, the B-cells, NK cells, and immunoglobulin are stimulated, which improve our immune system. This is one of the best defenses we have against cancer.

IMPROVES MEMORY.

Along with the great benefits laughter can bring to your body, it can also highly improve your memory.  In a study at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, humor during instruction led to increased test scores. The more stressed we are, the harder it is for us to focus, learn and retain. A study conducted at Loma Linda University in California found that laughter helps lower stress hormones which can greatly improve our memory.

PAIN RELIEVER. So, laughter not only reduces your stress but it can literally help in your pain management. Laughter releases endorphins which are the body’s natural pain killers. A team of researchers has reported that laughing can also increase pain tolerance in your body. A study in 2011 conducted by researchers from Oxford University suggests that it’s not just about positive emotions when laughing, but it’s mainly the laughter itself.

HEALTHIER BRAIN. Oxygen is one of the key compounds in biological energy inside the human body. Laughing forces us to use our respiratory system in a short span. This intense continued action generates blood flow making our heart rate increase momentarily, which results in increasing amount of oxygen going to the brain. A well-oxygenated brain is a sharp brain.

LAUGHTER IS AN EXERCISE. How is laughing a form of exercise? Laugher is literally a physical action. It’s an exercise for the cardiovascular system and your abs.  A professor at Oxford University led a study that shows that laughter is a repeated forceful exhalation of breath from the lungs. It increases the size of the heart’s blood vessels which also provides the same results as jogging or working out at a gym. And laughing makes the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs.

ENHANCES MOOD. Studies show that the simple act of laughing can improve your mood greatly and increase your overall sense of well-being. Laughter contains analgesic value that improves your mood. By being in a good mood, you will be more productive, you’ll feel happier and more satisfied which also results in a healthier heart.
